New Zealand witnessed a massive strike on Thursday (Oct. 23), with around 100,000 teachers, nurses, and public sector workers walking off the job to demand higher wages and improved working conditions. The "super strike" ranks as one of the largest industrial actions in the country's history.

The strike involved multiple unions that decided to take action after collective negotiations with the coalition government broke down. While the specific demands vary between unions, common grievances include low pay, staff shortages, lack of resources, and deteriorating working conditions. Unions emphasized that these issues have severely impacted employees' willingness to work and have indirectly led to a decline in the quality of public services.

In recent years, New Zealand's healthcare and education systems have been under sustained pressure, with many hospitals operating over capacity and schools facing frequent loss of teaching staff. At a rally in Auckland, one nurse expressed frustration, stating, "Are we just supposed to watch patients' conditions worsen, without enough medical staff and resources to treat them, and ultimately be unable to save their lives?" A secondary school teacher also noted that many educators are dissatisfied with low pay, ultimately choosing to leave schools or even move overseas.

The coalition government strongly criticized the strike. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon suggested it was politically motivated, while Public Service Minister Judith Collins accused the unions of choosing street protests over negotiation, characterizing the action as a "political stunt."
