The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) opened a condolence site today at the University Gallery for the public to pay tribute to Professor Yang Chen-ning, the first Chinese Nobel laureate, who passed away on Oct. 18, 2025, at the age of 103.

The memorial site opened at 9 a.m. in the University Library. A portrait of Professor Yang was displayed at the center, flanked by the words "In Lasting Memory of Professor Yang Chen-ning 1922-2025." Sixteen wreaths were arranged on both sides of the room, and a multimedia screen projected highlights of his life and groundbreaking achievements. Throughout the morning, members of the public visited the site to bow in respect and leave messages in the condolence book.

Mr. Wang, a Ph.D. student at CUHK's physics department, was among the first visitors. He shared that Professor Yang was his "idol," and his passing left him heartbroken for days. He regretted not meeting him, having enrolled after Yang's teaching years.

Nearby, a bronze statue of Professor Yang, unveiled in 2007 to mark his Nobel Prize's 50th anniversary and his 85th birthday, stands in the Lady Shaw Building's rooftop garden, adorned with flowers. Ms. Cao Feifeng, a visiting scholar from Zhejiang University of Technology, brought flowers from a local market, expressing admiration for Yang's decision to return to China during challenging times, noting it as an inspiration for overseas scholars.

Professor Chen Fong-ching, an 85-year-old Emeritus Fellow at CUHK, remembered his friend, stating that Yang's research was crucial for fundamental theoretical physics. He praised Yang as "a truly great man" and wrote in the condolence book: "Professor Yang, you have lived a splendid life. Your legacy will inspire many. The memories we shared will remain in my heart. Rest in peace."
