Following his departure, his wife, Weng Fan, published a heartfelt tribute across multiple platforms today (Oct. 19). She expressed that Yang had "handed in a satisfactory answer sheet for the progress of humanity" and shared how profoundly fortunate she felt to have had his companionship over the years.
Below is the short memorial essay written by Weng Fan:
He Handed in a Satisfactory Answer Sheet
Mr. Yang must have left with contentment. In his lifetime, he handed in a satisfactory answer sheet for the rejuvenation of our nation, the prosperity of our country, and the progress of humanity.
When Mr. Yang was nearly ninety years old, he wrote the following poem, which I have translated into Chinese:
On Reaching Age Ninety
My life has been
A promising life, fully fulfilled,
A dedicated life, with purpose and principle,
A happy life, with no remorse or resentment,
And a long life…
Traversed in deep gratitude.
Indeed, his was a life of ideals, struggle, responsibility, dedication, happiness, and gratitude. How incredibly fortunate I was to have his companionship for so many years!
As expressed in The Little Prince, I believe that whenever we look up at the starry sky at night, Mr. Yang will be on one of those stars, smiling down upon us. We can always draw from him the strength to "strive continuously for self-improvement and carry the world with virtue."
