On Oct. 21, in the first round of voting for the Prime Ministerial designation in Japan's House of Representatives, Liberal Democratic Party president Sanae Takaichi secured a majority of votes, elected as Japan's 104th Prime Minister. Takaichi's election also makes her the first female Prime Minister in Japanese history. What do local people think?

An elderly woman who has undergone two heart surgeries admitted that the cost of living in Japan is high and hopes Takaichi can improve medical welfare and reduce taxes. "At first, she seemed a bit unreliable, but as a woman myself, I have great expectations for her."

She hopes Takaichi can be active on the international stage, like Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and maintain friendly relations with foreign countries. A working mother focused on childcare support, lamenting that "it's very hard to work while taking care of children." She believes that current conditions in Japan are not yet sufficient for children to grow up worry-free and hopes for improvements in this area.

One female interviewee was happy that Takaichi broke the "glass ceiling" in Japanese politics, saying, "It feels like we've entered a new era!" Another interviewee said she could feel the overall social trend moving towards "promoting women," but she emphasized the hope that this isn't just about pursuing superficial appearances and numerical changes, but rather about utilizing talented people effectively based on societal needs.
