During a meeting at the White House on Oct. 20 (local time) with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, U.S. President Donald Trump was asked by reporters about the delayed meeting—scheduled nine months into his term—and whether it reflected concerns about the current Australian government, including comments made by the present Australian Ambassador to the U.S. and former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
According to a report by The Guardian, Rudd had previously referred to Trump as a "village idiot" four years ago.
When questioned, Trump appeared unfamiliar with Rudd and unaware of his past criticism. Seemingly confused, Trump responded, "What did the ambassador say? I don't know anything about him. If he said something bad, maybe he'd like to apologize. Don't tell me."
He then turned to Albanese and asked, "Where is he? Does he still work for you?" Albanese looked up and gestured across the table, replying, "He's right here."
"I don't like you either. And I probably never will," US President Donald Trump told Australian ambassador Kevin Rudd at the White House cabinet room table.
The report added that Rudd later leaned across the table to apologize to Trump during the encounter.
