Following the earlier arrest of Darren Wang, there has been new progress in the Taiwan's artist conscription case today (Oct. 21). According to Taiwan's media reports, this morning, Taiwan's artists Bolin Chen, Kai Hsiu, Energy's Joe Chang, and Bang Bang Tang's Liljay were all summoned for questioning.
42-year-old Kai Hsiu, who is the husband of Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actress Alyssa Chia, is currently filming in Xiamen. Chia's management company responded on her behalf, stating, "It is everyone's responsibility to cooperate with the investigation to clarify the facts. However, due to the sudden nature of the incident, law enforcement arrived early in the morning and handcuffed him, which frightened the children. I am very shocked and worried."
According to Taiwan's media, Kai Hsiu confessed to the police that he spent 150,000 TWD (approximately RMB 38,000) to "pretend to have high blood pressure." Initially, he wanted to seek an exemption from military service but ultimately compromised and served alternative military duty. Bang Bang Tang's Liljay also admitted to the police that he spent 300,000 TWD (approximately RMB 76,000) to evade conscription.
Records show that Kai Hsiu was assigned to serve in the New Taipei City Civil Affairs Bureau for alternative military duty in June 2016, originally expected to serve for one year and be discharged in May of the following year. However, in September 2016, Alyssa Chia announced she was four months pregnant. According to regulations regarding alternative military service, if a conscript has a child under the age of 12 and a spouse who is more than six months pregnant, they can apply for early discharge. Hsiu met the criteria at that time and was therefore discharged early, serving only five months from his enlistment on May 12 to his discharge on November 29.
