Cambodia's Techo International Airport was officially opened on Oct. 20, with Leung Chun-ying, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, attending the ceremony. Leung stated that the airport will serve as a new engine for Cambodia's development and emphasized that Hong Kong, under the "one country, two systems" framework, possesses unique advantages to actively participate in Cambodia's infrastructure development and regional cooperation.
Leung expressed that with the operational launch of Techo International Airport, Hong Kong and Cambodia will see broader development space for economic, trade, and cultural exchanges. He believes that Hong Kong can continue to play a bridging role, facilitating greater participation of the mainland and Hong Kong enterprises in Cambodia's economic development, particularly in deepening cooperation in areas such as transportation infrastructure, smart cities, and sustainable development. This will help enhance Cambodia's connectivity at both regional and global levels.
Leung added that the GX Foundation, which he founded, will continue to promote public health and humanitarian assistance work in Cambodia. In collaboration with Techo International Airport, the foundation will initiate dengue fever prevention and control projects, support local livelihood improvements, and foster mutual understanding between people.
Located in Kandal Province, approximately 19 kilometers from central Phnom Penh, Techo International Airport spans a total area of about 2,600 hectares and is being developed in three phases. As Cambodia's first 4F-class international airport, the first phase represents an investment of approximately US$2.15 billion, making it the country's largest and highest-standard international aviation hub and a significant landmark project.
