"Finding a Place to Call Home?" exhibition (etnet)

Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts is proud to announce the opening of "Finding a Place to Call Home?" on Oct. 1, 2025, as part of its multi-year renovation of permanent exhibition halls. This poignant exhibition delves into the complex themes of immigration and displacement through the lens of the Immigration Department's Victoria Centre, a former prison, and the experiences of undocumented immigrants and Vietnamese boat people.

At the heart of the exhibition lies "Resilience," a powerful mural created by American artist Eric Okdeh. This impactful artwork is the result of a collaborative process involving personal interviews and painting workshops between Okdeh and a diverse group of community members. Participants include former Vietnamese refugees, members of the diaspora, asylum seekers, former Victoria Prison staff, and former Marine Police officers who participated in the rescue of Vietnamese refugees at sea.

"Resilience" serves as a tapestry of interwoven narratives, bringing together diverse voices and lived experiences to convey a shared human longing for hope, peace, and a sense of belonging. Through this community-driven public art initiative, the exhibition aims to provoke reflection on both historical events and contemporary societal issues.

This exhibition underscores Tai Kwun's mission to foster inclusion, cultural engagement, and public discourse through art and heritage. By centering community-driven narratives, "Finding a Place to Call Home?" transforms public art into a platform for collective reckoning and empathy.
