The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) announced tonight that it is considering issuing the No. 9 Gale or Storm Signal between 1:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday (Sept. 24), as Super Typhoon Ragasa is expected to pass approximately 100 kilometers south of Hong Kong in the morning.

According to the latest forecast, Ragasa's hurricane-force winds may approach Hong Kong overnight, with wind strength steadily increasing. The Observatory has urged the public to stay alert to the latest weather updates and to complete all precautionary measures as soon as possible.

Ragasa has a vast circulation with intense winds, and weather conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly tonight. Tomorrow (Sept. 24), Hong Kong will likely face sustained severe weather, including frequent squalls, torrential rain, thunderstorms, and very rough seas. Coastal areas, especially on the eastern and southern sides, may experience overtopping waves, and all water activities should be suspended immediately.

Due to the anticipated storm surge, water levels along the coast could rise by about 2 meters, starting around 6:00 a.m., peaking later in the morning to early afternoon. Most coastal areas are expected to experience water levels 3.5 to 4 meters above chart datum, with Tolo Harbour potentially reaching 4 to 5 meters above chart datum.

In the past hour, maximum sustained wind speeds recorded were:

  • Tai Lo Shan: 92 km/h (maximum gust: 116 km/h)
  • Waglan Island: 76 km/h (maximum gust: 92 km/h)
  • Cheung Chau: 67 km/h (maximum gust: 82 km/h)

The public is advised to stay away from shorelines, secure loose items, and remain indoors as conditions worsen. The HKO is closely monitoring the storm's trajectory and will issue further updates as necessary.
