A 1,000-pound unexploded World War II bomb was discovered in Quarry Bay, Hong Kong, on the afternoon of Sept. 19, prompting the police to evacuate approximately 6,000 residents from 18 buildings before commencing a high-risk disposal operation.
The HK Police announced on social media this morning (Sept. 20) that the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau (EOD) began defusing the bomb at 2 a.m. under challenging conditions. The team has worked tirelessly to neutralize the threat within 12 hours to ensure public safety and facilitate the resumption of normal activities in the area.
According to sources, the EOD team has successfully sawed through the bomb's casing and is currently burning the explosives inside. The operation is expected to be completed before 2 p.m. today.
