The new Policy Address proposes the development of a yacht economy. In response to legislators' questions at the Legislative Council Policy Address Q&A session today (Sept. 18), Chief Executive John Lee stated that Hong Kong possesses significant advantages and economic value in developing a yacht economy, making it one of the key directions for the government to promote diversified development.
Lee pointed out that the government has already integrated organizations such as the Trade Development Council, Invest Hong Kong, and Economic and Trade Offices as platforms to assist enterprises in "bringing in and going global," promoting Hong Kong's tourism industry, including yacht tourism, through various avenues.
Lee mentioned that during the public consultation period, many yacht companies provided comparative analyses of yacht tourism in Hong Kong and the mainland, noting that Hong Kong could leverage its international advantages to become a yacht "showroom," complementing the mainland's yacht manufacturing industry. He also stated that the "yacht tourism" initiative has broad prospects. This year, Hong Kong has been removing barriers and easing restrictions to support the development of yacht tourism, hoping to accelerate its launch through collective efforts while ensuring navigational safety. He acknowledged that the "bottleneck" in developing yacht tourism in Hong Kong is the lack of berths. Therefore, before constructing more berths, visiting yachts without reserved berths will be allowed to navigate freely in Hong Kong waters.
