A lamp, a bed, a wall—these were the only things that filled his memory of the psychiatric ward—and they marked the darkest chapter of his life.
"If my pain can bring warmth to others, then everything is worth it." This is the belief that carried Kevin Cheung, one of this year's Ten Outstanding Teens of Hong Kong, through the depths of severe depression. Having emerged from the shadows, he now walks toward the light—not only for himself, but for others. He has made it his mission to become a psychiatrist, to help people break free from the chains of emotional suffering, and to challenge the stigma that still surrounds mental illness in society.
In his journey of healing, Cheung returned to school, earned scholarships, and joined prestigious international medical programs, including one at the University of Cambridge. But beyond academic excellence, he found deeper meaning in service—volunteering to help those in need, and in doing so, rediscovering the value of his own life.
Life can be bitter. But it is that very bitterness that makes hope so precious. Cheung chooses to become a wounded healer—someone who turns his own scars into a source of strength for others, walking with them through the valleys of despair, and offering light, courage, and companionship.
Because he believes—even the smallest act of kindness can become the turning point in someone's life.
