The Observatory issued the No. 8 Gale or Storm Signal at 9:20 pm yesterday (Sept. 7) and the Yellow Rainstorm Warning Signal at 4:55 am today (Sept. 8). The Drainage Services Department (DSD) stated that its Emergency Control Centre was activated at 7:20 pm yesterday. Currently, 60 emergency response teams have been dispatched to handle public reports of flooding, with repeated inspections and clearance operations carried out at about 240 locations across Hong Kong that are prone to flooding due to blockage. As of 8 a.m. today, no confirmed flooding cases have been reported.

The DSD indicated that during the approach of Severe Tropical Storm "Tapah," associated strong winds and outer rainbands may bring squally heavy showers. Under the combined influence of astronomical high tides and storm surge, low-lying areas may face flooding risks. To ensure personal safety, members of the public are advised to stay away from watercourses and coastal areas.
The DSD added that, given the unstable weather conditions, it will maintain close liaison and cooperation with the Observatory and the Highways Department, staying vigilant and promptly deploying emergency response teams to handle any flooding cases as quickly as possible. The DSD also appeals to the public to keep drainage channels clear at all times and avoid placing objects that may block inlets. In the event of serious flooding, evacuate as soon as possible. If flooding is detected, immediately call the DSD's 24-hour hotline at 2300 1110.
