Waiting outside for a bus during a heatwave can be difficult, with hot air and exhaust fumes creating an unpleasant experience. However, many passengers have recently found relief from the heat.
Enhanced Amenities
The Government's district governance measures focus on improving travel experiences. Last year, several upgrades were made at the Ma On Shan Town Centre Public Transport Terminus, including the addition of an air-conditioned waiting hall with seating, allowing passengers to relax comfortably while they await their buses.
Opened in the first quarter of last year, the waiting hall features a real-time bus arrival display, providing passengers with precise waiting times.
Passengers have welcomed these enhancements. One remarked, "It's much better inside this room." Another added, "It's preferable to being outside in the heat today."
Safety Improvements
The upgrades also involved converting a traditional "parallel" bus bay into a "saw-tooth" design, improving safety by better separating pedestrians from vehicles.
Felix Yim, Principal Transport Officer of the Transport Department, noted that the second phase of enhancements is already in progress. This phase will include two additional waiting halls for bus passengers and renovations to the taxi stands, with completion expected by 2026.
District-Wide Upgrades
Improvement initiatives are being gradually implemented across various public transport interchanges in different districts. For instance, the ventilation system at the Tsuen Wan Bayview Garden Bus Terminus was successfully upgraded in the first quarter of this year.
Mr. Yim explained that the ongoing works encompass lighting upgrades, enhanced ventilation systems, and renovations to walls and ceilings.
The department believes these improvements will create more comfortable waiting environments, encouraging continued use and support for public transport services.
