Belgium's comic series "The Adventures of Tintin" is popular worldwide, but did you know that one of its stories is closely connected to China? In this episode, let's follow the lens of international vloggers to learn more about it!

"The Adventures of Tintin" was created by Belgian cartoonist Hergé. Since its debut in the 1920s, it has gained widespread popularity in Europe. The fifth installment of the series, "The Blue Lotus," was first published in 1936. The story is set in Shanghai, China, and follows Tintin and his Chinese friend "Tchang" as they track down opium smugglers in China.

The story mentions Tintin arriving in Shanghai in the early 1930s and uncovering a Japanese plot to blow up a railway, creating a pretext for invading China. At the time, the Japanese embassy in Belgium protested to the Belgian government and the newspaper publishing the comic, demanding changes to the content. However, the newspaper and the author himself resisted the pressure and ignored the demands.

Some of the Chinese illustrations in "The Blue Lotus" were drawn with the assistance of Chinese sculptor Zhang Chongren, who was living in Belgium at the time. He was also the real-life inspiration for Tintin's Chinese friend "Tchang" in "The Blue Lotus" and was a close Chinese friend of the author Hergé.
