According to The Wall Street Journal, US President Donald Trump announced plans to issue an executive order requiring all voters nationwide to present identification during elections. The proposal, revealed via Trump's Truth Social platform, is part of his broader push to reform voting rules ahead of next year's midterm election.
However, US media outlets have raised concerns that such a move may violate the Constitution and trigger legal challenges.
In his post on Truth Social, Trump declared: "Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS! I Will Be Doing An Executive Order To That End!!!" He also called for states to use paper ballots exclusively, eliminate mail-in voting and voting machines, and grant exemptions only to critically ill individuals and active-duty military personnel.
Trump, who continues to claim without evidence that his 2020 election loss was due to widespread voter fraud, specifically criticized mail-in ballots as a source of what he alleges to be "massive fraud."
Currently, 36 US states have legislation requiring voters to provide some form of identification at the polls. The remaining 14 states and Washington, D.C., verify voter identity using alternative methods, such as signature matching.
Earlier this month, Trump vowed to ban mail-in voting and insisted states must follow federal government directives on elections. However, legal analysts note that the US Constitution grants states the authority to determine voting procedures and oversee elections. Any significant changes to election laws would require congressional approval.
In June, a federal judge struck down most provisions of a previous Trump executive order, including requirements for voters to prove US citizenship when registering.
