As the current Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government actively works to establish the city as an international hub for higher education and promote the "Study in Hong Kong" brand, the demand for student accommodation has become increasingly urgent. Entering the 2025/2026 academic year, recent figures obtained by the Hong Kong Wen Wei Po from eight public universities indicate that approximately 42,000 student beds are available across these institutions, with The Chinese University of Hong Kong offering the most at over 9,800 beds. Based on the number of students enrolled in subsidized programs, there is an average of about 2.5 students competing for each bed. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University sees the highest competition, with 4.1 students per bed, while Lingnan University has the best chances of accommodation, with about 1.3 students vying for each bed.
Regarding accommodation fees, the costs for the eight universities range from about HK$12,000 to over HK$40,000 for the new academic year, depending on categories such as local and non-local students. Many universities also charge different fees based on dormitory types and room arrangements, with the most expensive options at The University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology costing HK$49,000 and HK$47,000, respectively.

Utilizing Off-Campus Accommodation Plans to Increase Supply
In response to the growing demand for student accommodation at local universities, many institutions are actively planning and implementing the construction of additional student dormitories, with an expectation of adding at least 7,640 more university beds in the coming years. Simultaneously, universities are exploring off-campus accommodation plans and identifying suitable properties for conversion into student housing to increase supply.
Beware of Rental Scams: Never Pay Rent Without Viewing the Property
Many university students have off-campus accommodation needs, and several universities have posted rental reminders or anti-scam information on their websites. For example, Lingnan University's guide outlines common rental scams, indicating that scammers may impersonate landlords by posting ads on rental websites and contacting victims. They often claim to be overseas and unable to show the property in person, asking victims to pay rent upfront and then sending keys and contracts via mail. Scammers may then lure victims into logging onto fake rental websites and paying with credit cards to steal their credit card information for illegal transactions.
