To commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, a grand military parade will be held at Tiananmen Square in Beijing on September 3. The Hong Kong Education Bureau recently sent a letter encouraging all primary and secondary schools in the region to hold flag-raising ceremonies and sing the national anthem before classes on that day. Schools are also encouraged to arrange for students and teachers to watch the parade and participate in related learning activities. The Association of Hong Kong Flag-Guards has received registrations from nearly 350 schools, with over 180,000 teachers and students responding to participate, fostering a sense of national identity, belonging, and responsibility through the history of the war.
The Education Bureau's circular notes that the theme of this year's parade is to commemorate the victory in the War of Resistance, promote the spirit of resistance, and demonstrate the military's determination and capability to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests, as well as to maintain world peace. The significance of this event is profound and far-reaching. The bureau encourages all primary and secondary schools to hold national flag-raising ceremonies and sing the national anthem before classes on that day, as well as to incorporate a "speech under the national flag" in commemoration of the victory and arrange for students to watch the parade in the morning. Schools may also organize related learning activities, such as moments of silence, themed book exhibitions, and discussions to help students understand this challenging period in history, conveying the message of "remembering history, honoring the martyrs, cherishing peace, and creating the future," while cultivating students' sense of national identity and pride, contributing to the country's future development.
Over 180,000 Teachers and Students Participate in Singing Songs about the War of Resistance
Regarding the joint school flag-raising ceremony to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory, support has been received from the Education Bureau, the Home Affairs and Youth Affairs Bureau, the Security Bureau, the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau, and the Central Government's Liaison Office in Hong Kong. The main event will take place at Fukien Secondary School Affiliated School at 8:30 am, featuring a "speech under the national flag," with students and teachers singing classic songs about the War of Resistance. As of last week, nearly 350 schools had registered, involving over 180,000 teachers and students.
The education sector in Hong Kong will also implement various related learning activities. The Hong Kong Council of the Church of Christ in China has prepared a series of learning activities to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory across several primary and secondary schools. The council's Academic Affairs Director, Chu Kai-wing, stated in Wen Wai Po that they had invited the Center of National History Education (Hong Kong) to compile learning materials on the "Fourteen Years War of Resistance," covering 15 topics.
"Fourteen Years War of Resistance" Materials Distributed to Primary 6 for Self-Study
Among them, Dr. P.S. Cheung, principal of the Church of Christ in China Ming Kei College, indicated that they are combining morning assembly activities, display boards, and distributing information to students and parents to help everyone understand the significance of the commemorative day. Throughout September, they will arrange for students of all grades to visit the National Security Exhibition Gallery and participate in guided tours related to the War of Resistance, allowing students to step out of the classroom and learn history. Ho Po-ling, principal of C.C.C. Kei Wai Primary School (Ma Wan), noted that primary school principals in the district had begun preparing for the 80th-anniversary activities as early as April, ensuring that all affiliated schools participate. This includes sharing during the morning assembly on September 3, watching the parade together, and explaining the history to students. Furthermore, they will distribute the "Fourteen Years of War of Resistance" learning materials to sixth-grade students for self-study, first conducting an online quiz, followed by integrating related books and websites, and organizing a district-wide history quiz competition in April next year to maximize the use of the materials and deepen students' understanding of the war history.
Scientia Secondary School will hold a special morning assembly on that day, including watching a live broadcast of the parade, followed by education on the theme of the war, with class teachers guiding students in in-depth discussions. HKFEW Wong Cho Bau Secondary School will also conduct a school-wide flag-raising ceremony and a "speech under the national flag" by the principal, as well as a live broadcast of the parade.
In terms of post-secondary institutions, the Hong Kong College of Technology will hold "Boxue Classes," with around 200 teachers and students watching the live broadcast of the parade. Participants will share their understanding and enthusiasm for the country's military development, engaging in real-time discussions. This activity combines historical education, national defense science, and interactive engagement, showcasing the attention and understanding of Hong Kong's youth regarding the country's military development.
