According to a report from CCTV News, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung stated on Aug. 24, while on a flight from Japan to Washington, that during his visit, he will negotiate with US President Trump on issues such as security, defense budget, and tariffs.
Lee concluded his visit to Japan that day and held a discussion with accompanying reporters on the flight to the US regarding the agenda for the South Korea-US leaders' meeting scheduled for Aug. 25. Lee expressed that he did not want to limit the topics, saying "I hope to cover all necessary matters." However, he noted that there are not many sudden topics that arise during summit meetings; major issues will be specifically discussed in advance. The main topics for this meeting will include security, defense budget, and tariff issues.
Lee mentioned that the US side has indeed made demands regarding the flexibility of US troops stationed in South Korea, but "this is a matter that will be difficult for us to agree to." He added that South Korea also needs to discuss future strategies concerning US troops in South Korea. Lee pointed out that the claims regarding US troops differ slightly between the two sides, but both will work towards adjustments in a cooperative manner.
In terms of diplomacy, Lee emphasized that with the increasing trend of countries focusing on their own interests, "to protect our national interests, we need to put in several times more effort than in the past." He stated that he would "prepare in advance and do his utmost."
