Japan is grappling with a record-breaking heatwave, with temperatures frequently soaring to 40°C, severely impacting the livestock industry in Niigata Prefecture.

Due to the heatwave, dairy production has dropped sharply, with milk yields falling 15% compared to the same period last year. Over 5,500 egg-laying chickens have died because of the extreme heat, while pigs are experiencing delayed shipments of 1-2 weeks. If the scorching weather persists, experts warn of potential supply disruptions in the near future.

According to Japanese media, the heat has caused cows to lose their appetite, significantly reducing milk production. This could lead to shortages in school milk supplies by September if high temperatures continue. Similarly, pigs are growing more slowly due to heat-induced loss of appetite. The prolonged heatwave could also affect the breeding season, reducing conception rates during the peak period of August and September, which may drive up market prices and tighten supplies.

In addition to the mass chicken deaths, a farm in Gosen City reported a 50% decrease in egg production, with some eggs being unusually small and L-shaped in size.

Farmers also noted that the extreme heat has led to skyrocketing electricity bills as they operate multiple air conditioning units and employ additional manpower to cool their livestock. Despite these efforts, the measures have proven insufficient in combating the relentless heat.

The livestock industry is now urging the government to provide more substantial support to address the heat crisis. Experts caution that prolonged extreme weather could force the sector to undergo significant transformations to adapt to the changing climate.
