The iconic Sunbeam Theatre, which closed in North Point this March after over 50 years, will reopen as "Sunbeam Whampoa" on Aug. 16. Located near Whampoa MTR Station, the 50,000-square-foot venue will honor its legacy of promoting traditional arts while introducing innovative cinematic experiences.
The new complex features four themed cinemas: "Time Travel" for nostalgic classics, "3-Hour Epics" for lengthy masterpieces, "Retro Revival" for Hong Kong gems, and "First-Run Films" for new releases, all equipped with 4K Dolby systems across 1,200 seats. Tickets are priced at a flat HK$80, undercutting most cinemas.
The opening weekend includes over 20 classic films, with Demon Slayer: Mugen Train leading with 13 screenings. Other highlights include Rashomon, Somewhere in Time, and local hits like The Happenings.
Beyond films, the venue includes a flexible stage for live performances, blending traditional arts with modern entertainment. Located at Whampoa Garden Phase 8, it's easily accessible via MTR Exit D and aims to attract both loyal fans and new audiences with its affordable pricing and diverse offerings.
