Four top European football clubs played exhibition matches at the Kai Tak Sports Park's stadium at the end of last month, with some players suggesting there was room for improvement in the pitch conditions. John Sharkey, CEO of Kai Tak Sports Park, stated today (August 8) that the turf installed for the event had been certified as fully meeting top-tier competition standards.
Sharkey explained that every time natural turf is laid at the Kai Tak Stadium, it is assessed by a FIFA-approved professional organization. The turf used for this event had already been certified as fully compliant with elite competition requirements.
He acknowledged that the pitch was initially slightly soft due to limited use before the matches, but by the time Arsenal faced Tottenham, the conditions were ideal—with Spurs players even praising the high quality of the grass.
Earlier, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rossana Law had responded to concerns by agreeing there was room for improvement but emphasized the current pitch quality was reasonable and acceptable. She added that further research would be conducted with turf maintenance experts.
