Octopus Cards Limited has announced a partnership with UnionPay International to fully support WeChat Pay QR codes in the Octopus App. Users can now pay directly by scanning WeChat Pay QR codes in the Mainland using the Octopus UnionPay card within their Octopus wallet, covering major chain merchants, individual vendors, and transportation scenarios. To encourage usage, Octopus will waive foreign exchange transaction fees until September 30, 2025.
The new "Travel" page in the Octopus App integrates services needed for cross-boundary travel, including high-speed rail ticket bookings, ride-hailing services, and a one-stop payment management solution. Users can quickly scan WeChat Pay QR codes for payments on the "Travel" page, enjoying a more convenient payment process while accessing their Octopus UnionPay card's transaction history, balance, and cross-border payment management.
Octopus stated that whether for shopping, dining, or transportation, users can easily make payments anytime and anywhere, seamlessly connecting them to the Greater Bay Area lifestyle. Since launching the WeChat Pay QR code functionality last year, Octopus has continuously optimized the cross-border payment experience.
To encourage customers to register and use the WeChat Pay QR code service, Octopus is offering a limited-time promotion, waiving foreign exchange transaction fees until September 30, 2025. All transactions using the WeChat Pay QR code through the Octopus App will enjoy this fee waiver, providing users with a more economical cross-border consumption experience.
