A lone gunman opened fire in a bustling Manhattan office building on Monday (July 28), killing five people—including a senior Blackstone executive—and injuring six others before taking his own life, police confirmed. The attack sent shockwaves through New York's financial district, with lockdowns lasting hours as authorities secured the area.

The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shawn Tamura (transliterated), targeted the building in an apparently random assault. Among the victims was Wesley LePatner, 48, CEO of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust, who was shot in the lobby while attempting to hide behind a pillar, according to witnesses. The investment firm mourned the "brilliant and compassionate" executive, who previously spent a decade at Goldman Sachs before joining Blackstone in 2014.

The attack also claimed the life of off-duty NYPD officer Mohammad Islam, 36, a Bangladeshi immigrant and father of two with a pregnant wife. The four-year veteran was working in building security at the time. "Officer Islam represented the best of New York," Police Commissioner Edward Caban stated at a somber press conference.

Authorities are investigating Tamura's motives, with early reports suggesting possible workplace grievances. The shooting marks Manhattan's deadliest gun violence incident this year, reigniting debates over urban security and mental health resources. Mayor Eric Adams ordered flags lowered to half-staff as the city grieves.
