At least six people lost their lives and 29 others were injured on Sunday during a stampedeat a Hindu temple in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, according to police reports.
The incident occurred at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar district, located approximately 53 km south of Dehradun, the state capital.
Police official Pramendra Singh Dobal explained that the panic was triggered by a rumor about an electric shock affecting a devotee on the stairs, about 100 meters down the temple path, which caused the stampede.
"We are investigating the matter," he said.
Authorities deployed police and the State Disaster Response Force to the scene to conduct relief and rescue efforts.
Haridwar is a significant pilgrimage site for Hindu devotees, and police noted that a large crowd had gathered at the temple prior to the stampede.
Television footage showed injured devotees being transported to hospitals in ambulances, with many receiving treatment at the healthcare facility.
