David C. Whitwam, Chairman of the New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, has called the city home for over three decades. Arriving in 1993, David has since developed a deep affection for Hong Kong, which he describes as a vibrant, safe, and free city—one that allows people to live life the way they choose.

In this interview, he reflects on his personal journey and the city's evolution, drawing on his experience as both a long-time resident and a leader in international business. To him, Hong Kong is like a giant stage that comes alive at 10 a.m. and doesn't sleep until midnight. It's this energy and infrastructure—world-class transport, legal systems, and international connectivity—that make Hong Kong a unique hub for global business.

David highlights how Hong Kong serves as a natural gateway to the Greater Bay Area, offering New Zealand businesses—and many others—a powerful launchpad into China's vast market. With legal and regulatory similarities between New Zealand and Hong Kong, companies can quickly adapt, especially in sectors like food exports, industrial ingredients, and even thoroughbred racing.

He also shares how he has brought New Zealand delegations to explore Hong Kong's infrastructure—from sewage treatment and solar energy to eco-parks and stormwater tunnels—many of which are underappreciated even by locals. He believes the government could do more to promote these developments to residents, showcasing the city's green ambitions and future-readiness.

From witnessing the 1997 Handover ceremonies to helping bridge cultures and economies, David's story is one of integration, admiration, and opportunity. Through his eyes, we see a Hong Kong that continues to connect, inspire, and evolve.
