This year's 8th typhoon, Co-may, has intensified into a severe tropical storm, creating a "dual typhoon" with Francisco in the Pacific. The latest issue of the Hong Kong Observatory describes the two typhoons as "one to the east and one to the west," predicting that Francisco will generally move towards the Ryukyu Islands and then towards the southeastern coast of China. Meanwhile, Co-may is expected to remain over 600 kilometers away from Hong Kong, posing no direct threat to the city's weather. However, another low-pressure area may form over the weekend.

The Hong Kong Observatory stated that at 10 a.m. today (July 24), Tropical Storm Francisco was located about 210 kilometers south of Okinawa and is expected to move northwest at a speed of approximately 22 kilometers per hour, generally heading towards the Ryukyu Islands. Meanwhile, Severe Tropical Storm Co-may was situated about 340 kilometers northwest of Manila, moving slowly and lingering over northern Luzon. The Observatory noted that Co-may was initially within 800 kilometers of Hong Kong, but is expected to remain over 600 kilometers away, posing no direct threat to the city's weather.

The Observatory also mentioned that some computer models predict that another low-pressure area may form near Hainan Island over the weekend and move eastward across the northern South China Sea. According to the latest forecasts, this broad low-pressure system is expected to move northward towards the southern coast of China in the middle to later part of next week, bringing unstable weather to the region. If this scenario materializes, there will likely be more sudden rain along the Guangdong coast, while other areas will experience clearer skies.

The Observatory emphasized that convective cloud systems can influence each other and compete for the moisture resources needed for development, leading to significant variability. Additionally, computer models have limitations in accurately predicting such multi-center low-pressure systems, and there is still considerable divergence in current forecasts.
