White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that US Attorney General Bondi and Interior Secretary Burgum recently toured Alcatraz Island Prison in San Francisco Bay as part of an evaluation plan ordered by President Donald Trump in May to reopen the infamous facility.
Leavitt stated during a press briefing that the reopened prison would detain America's most notorious criminals and illegal foreign offenders awaiting deportation, describing it as a facility for "the nation's most heinous offenders."
This announcement follows President Trump's remarks in May, instructing authorities to assess the feasibility of reopening Alcatraz Island Prison, which had been closed since 1963 and repurposed as a tourist destination in 1973. The plan has sparked widespread controversy.
Earlier this month, on July 1, President Trump attended the inauguration ceremony of a new immigration detention center named "Alligator Devil's Island" (Alligator Alcatraz), inspired by Alcatraz. The new facility, with a capacity of 5,000 beds, is designed to house "illegal foreign criminals" and implement Trump's policy of mass deportations in a "cost-effective and efficient manner."
