A delegation of over 40 mainland publishers has brought nearly 20,000 premium books to this year's Hong Kong Book Fair, offering a cultural feast spanning political theory, national publishing projects, wartime historical records, culinary guides, and cutting-edge sci-fi comics. The exhibition combines intellectual depth with lively folk performances, such as Sichuan face-changing and long-spout tea art.
Chen Zhongkun, general manager of Ling Ling Book of Xiamen International Book Company, debuted his "Legends of Young Heroes" series – bilingual Chinese-English biographies of 12 ancient figures tailored for Hong Kong readers, co-published with a Taiwanese firm. The fair's opening day on July 16 featured a packed puppet show adaptation of "Water Margin", with audiences marveling at the "fresh and technically demanding" performance.
Master performer Zhuang Chenhua, a nationally recognized inheritor of puppetry, explained the excerpt, depicting Liangshan hero Lu Junyi disguising himself as a street performer. "Puppetry transcends language – even the deaf can appreciate its vivid storytelling," said Zhuang, highlighting efforts to revive traditional art among Hong Kong audiences. The mainland exhibitors aim to showcase China's publishing diversity while bridging cultures through intangible heritage.
