Since June 21, the waters near the Tokara Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, have experienced an unprecedented seismic swarm. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), as of 10:00 a.m. on July 11, a total of 1,802 earthquakes with a seismic intensity of 1 or higher have been recorded in the region.
In response to the ongoing seismic activity, the JMA held an emergency press conference on July 2, urging local residents to remain vigilant and continue making disaster preparedness efforts. The agency emphasized that each seismic event in the region follows a different pattern, making it difficult to predict how long this current wave of earthquakes will persist.
Residents are advised to stay alert and prepare for the possibility of stronger earthquakes.
The Tokara Islands are located in the southern part of Kagoshima Prefecture and consist of 12 islands, seven of which are inhabited.
