Although Japan's "July 5 earthquake prediction" has passed, the Tokara Islands off the coast of Kagoshima Prefecture continue to experience ongoing tremors, leading local residents to evacuate. According to NHK, this morning (July 6), a second batch of 46 residents evacuated from Akusekijima by boat, is expected to arrive in Kagoshima City tonight.
According to reports, around 2 pm (local time), two strong earthquakes, both measuring 5 on the intensity scale, occurred within less than 10 minutes. The first earthquake struck at 2:01 pm (local time), with a magnitude of 4.8 and a maximum intensity of 5. The epicenter was located 20 kilometers deep. Approximately six minutes later, at 2:07 pm, a second earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 occurred, also registering a maximum intensity of 5, with the same depth of 20 kilometers.
The Tokara Islands have been hit by a series of earthquakes in recent months, with a total of 1,400 tremors measuring over magnitude 1 recorded to date. The strongest earthquake occurred on the afternoon of July 3, with a magnitude of 5.5 and a weak intensity of 6.
It is reported that the first group of 13 residents evacuated to Kagoshima City by ferry on July 4, with ages ranging from 0 to 80. One female resident, interviewed by NHK on the ferry, stated, "Not knowing when the earthquakes would occur made it hard for me to sleep at night. Now I can finally sleep peacefully."
