Today marked the first public open day of China's first domestically built aircraft carrier, the Shandong, during its port call in Hong Kong. Over 2,000 enthusiastic citizens boarded the massive vessel, participating in this unprecedented opportunity as the Shandong opened its decks to the public for the very first time, drawing overwhelming public interest.
Visitors accessed the carrier via the aircraft transfer platform, then rode massive elevators to reach the flight deck—a process that elicited audible gasps of "Wow!" from many as they witnessed the sheer scale of the carrier firsthand.
The elevator ride lasted approximately 20 seconds, during which crew members warmly reminded visitors to "watch your step and mind the gaps", showcasing heartwarming interactions between the military and civilians.
At the rear of the hangar, the Shandong is equipped with gigantic aircraft elevators, typically used to transport fighter jets from the hangar to the flight deck. This time, Hong Kong citizens had the rare chance to experience the same elevator system used for combat aircraft—a moment of deep symbolic significance.
