For the first time, a Hong Kong payload specialist has been selected as a national reserve astronaut and is expected to carry out their first space mission as early as next year.
Chief Executive John Lee stated today (July 5) in a video speech at the launch ceremony of a youth space exploration delegation that this selection marks the nation's recognition of Hong Kong's scientific research talent and proves that as long as young people actively equip themselves and persistently pursue their dreams, the dream of space exploration is not out of reach.
Lee noted that with the nation's support, Hong Kong's university research teams have repeatedly participated in national space missions, contributing to the development of the country's aerospace endeavors. Under the InnoHK platform, the SAR government has established the Hong Kong Space Robotics and Energy Center, collaborating with multiple universities in Hong Kong and the mainland, as well as aerospace institutions, to contribute to the nation's Chang'e-8 lunar exploration mission.
Lee also emphasized that the SAR government is actively aligning with the national strategy to build a strong education system, continuously strengthening STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and innovation technology education in schools. The goal is to cultivate students' interest and capabilities in science and technology from an early age. The newly introduced primary school science curriculum and the updated junior secondary science curriculum will incorporate more aerospace and innovation technology elements, enhancing students' understanding of the nation's space programs and inspiring their passion for exploring the vast universe.
