The Hong Kong Observatory issued a special weather alert today (July 4) at 9:30 am, indicating that a low-pressure area located in the northeastern South China Sea has intensified into a tropical depression. The Observatory will issue the No. 1 standby signal at 12:20 pm today, which will be maintained for most of the day.
According to current forecasts, the tropical depression has a relatively small circulation and is moving slowly, remaining over 400 kilometers away from Hong Kong for the remainder of the day.
The Observatory anticipates that the tropical cyclone will gradually intensify, with a higher chance of lingering in the northeastern South China Sea over the weekend and shifting northward towards the Taiwan Strait and the eastern coast of Guangdong. However, its path still holds uncertainties.
The Observatory stated that it will assess whether to issue a higher tropical cyclone warning signal based on the distance of the cyclone's strong wind area from the Pearl River Estuary and its intensity. There will be swells in the coming days, and citizens are advised to stay away from the shoreline and refrain from water activities while monitoring the latest weather updates from the Observatory.
