According to Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun, US President Trump stated on June 29 that he is not prepared to reduce the 25% additional tariff imposed on Japanese cars. Additionally, Japan's Minister for Economic Revitalization, Akazawa Ryosei, was on his seventh visit to the US for negotiations but failed to meet with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, even though he extended his trip.
The report mentions that on June 29, during an appearance on Fox News, Trump said Japan does not import American cars, but the US brings in millions of Japanese cars, which is unfair. He explained this to Japan, and they understood it. Regarding the negotiation deadline, Trump added that he will send a letter, and the trade negotiations will be over.
According to Japan's Tokyo Broadcasting System, Minister Akazawa Ryosei was in the US for new rounds of negotiations on tariff issues and had originally planned to return home on June 28. However, problems arose regarding his meeting with Secretary Bessent. To meet with Bessent, Akazawa extended his stay in Washington but ultimately did not get to meet him and will return to Japan on June 30.
Before departing for Washington on June 26, Akazawa had clearly stated to reporters that no matter what, they cannot accept a 25% tariff on cars.
