Hong Kong's Northern Metropolis, a key driver of the city's future development, continues to draw international attention. The Northern Metropolis Coordination Office (NMCO) revealed yesterday (June 22) that the dean of Switzerland's prestigious IMD Business School recently visited Hong Kong to learn about the metropolis' planning and progress.
During the meeting, NMCO officials presented the Northern Metropolis University Town—a 90-hectare hub designed to strengthen Hong Kong's role as a global higher education hub and promote the "Study in Hong Kong" brand. The office expressed hopes for future collaboration with IMD, which already has partnerships with several local universities.
IMD's Visit Highlights Hong Kong's Rising Competitiveness
The visit comes just after IMD's 2025 World Competitiveness Ranking placed Hong Kong 3rd globally, its highest position since 2019. The city saw notable improvements in international investment (2nd), infrastructure (7th), and education (2nd).
IMD's delegation, led by Dean David Bach and Asia Director Mark Greeven, initiated the meeting to explore opportunities in the Northern Metropolis. Sources indicate that large-scale government-backed infrastructure projects like this are rare worldwide, making Hong Kong's plan particularly appealing to global investors.
Fast-Tracking the "Northern Metropolis University Town"
The government has reserved 90 hectares across Hung Shui Kiu/Ha Tsuen, Ngau Tam Mei, and the New Territories North New Town for the education hub. The project encourages local and international universities to collaborate on innovative programs and research.
