Hong Kong's higher education sector has achieved historic success in the 2026 QS World University Rankings, with five institutions now ranked in the global top 100. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) led the charge, climbing six places to 11th position - its highest ranking ever and Asia's second-best after the National University of Singapore (8th).
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) rose to 32nd, while HKUST reached 44th. Polytechnic University and City University secured 54th and 63rd, respectively. Hong Kong Baptist University also saw significant improvement, jumping to 244th place.
The results highlight Hong Kong's strengths in research impact and internationalization, with City University ranking second globally for citations per faculty. The achievements follow government initiatives to promote Hong Kong as an education hub, though analysts note challenges in maintaining international collaborations.
MIT maintained its top position for the 14th consecutive year, followed by Imperial College London and Stanford University. The rankings evaluated over 1,500 institutions across 106 countries using nine key indicators.
