On June 18, local time, CCTV, citing "three informed sources," reported that US President Donald Trump told his senior advisers on the evening of June 17 that he had approved a plan to attack Iran. However, the president has not yet issued a final order to proceed.
The Wall Street Journal, quoting its own sources, revealed that Trump aims to use the threat of military action to coerce Iran into complying with US demands. One of the potential targets for the strike is Iran's heavily fortified Fordow nuclear facility. The site is buried deep within a mountain, and military experts believe only the most powerful bunker-busting bombs could destroy it.
According to the report, Trump specifically asked his military advisers whether the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bomb could successfully destroy Fordow, one of Iran's three key nuclear sites. Trump reportedly seeks an outcome that would dismantle Iran's nuclear capabilities without dragging the US into a prolonged conflict in the Middle East.
A US official quoted in the report stated that the Department of Defense assured Trump of their confidence in the success of such an operation. However, it remains unclear whether Trump is fully convinced.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg, citing informed sources, reported that the attack could take place as early as this weekend.
