Today (June 9), the Academic Symposium on One Country, Two Systems organized by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences was held in Beijing with the theme "a five years of review and outlook on the implementation of the Law of the People's Repubilc of China on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region." Nearly 100 guests, experts, and scholars from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, as well as from countries including the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Malaysia, participated in the conference.
Gao Xiang, the President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. In his address, he emphasized that the promulgation and implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law marked a significant milestone in the development of the "One Country, Two Systems" initiative. He described the law as a guardian of Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, providing a solid legal guarantee for the sustainable development of the "One Country, Two Systems" framework.
Gao stated that the symposium aimed to learn and implement the important principles regarding Hong Kong and Macao work as outlined by President Xi Jinping, providing an interdisciplinary and cross-sector high-end platform for research and exchange on the theory and practice of "One Country, Two Systems."
He highlighted that "One Country, Two Systems" is a unique and unprecedented initiative. Practice has fully demonstrated that it is the best institutional arrangement for maintaining long-term prosperity and stability in the HKSAR and Macao SAR since their establishment, setting a successful precedent in peacefully resolving historical issues between different countries, social systems, and civilizations. It is a new contribution of the Chinese nation to world peace and development.
Gao expressed expectations for Hong Kong and Macao to seize historical development opportunities, better integrate into the national development framework, and play a more significant role in the process of realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Gao Xiang pointed out that conducting in-depth research on "One Country, Two Systems" and Hong Kong-Macao studies is of great significance and potential. The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences regards research on HKSAR and Macao SAR as a crucial field of study, dedicated to conducting theoretical and practical research on "One Country, Two Systems," actively constructing a foundational theory and academic discourse system for "One Country, Two Systems," nurturing a talent pool for Hong Kong-Macao studies, and actively serving the overall work related to Hong Kong and Macao, he said.
