Financial Secretary Paul Chan published a blog today (June 8) reflecting on the considerable increase in visitor numbers to Hong Kong in the first five months of this year. Looking ahead to the second half of the year, he expressed confidence that a series of cultural and sporting events will continue to take place in Hong Kong, leading to a sustained increase in annual visitor numbers.
Chan noted that in just over three months since its opening, the Kai Tak Sports Park has hosted popular singers and bands, while the previously popular concert venue, the Hong Kong Coliseum, now accommodates a wider variety of performances. Additionally, there are exciting sports events and cultural activities planned. He believes that the diverse range of themed activities enriches Hong Kong's cultural, sports, and entertainment offerings, gathering local and regional enthusiasts. This expansion of potential participants enhances the scale of events like concerts, making Hong Kong more attractive to top global performers.
Chan also estimated that major events in the first half of this year will attract about 840,000 tourists, generating HK$3.3 billion in consumer spending and contributing HK$1.8 billion in economic value added. Looking forward to the second half of 2025, multiple cultural and sporting events, such as football tournaments, food and wine festivals, and concerts, along with new attractions and the unique features of various neighborhoods, will draw large numbers of tourists. He is confident that annual visitor numbers will continue to rise. He emphasized the importance of providing tourists with a great experience, ensuring they enjoy their visit, food, and shopping, encouraging them to return and share their experiences with friends, thus becoming "fans" of Hong Kong.
