Young HK pianist shines internationally: 29-year-old Aristo Sham wins Van Cliburn International Piano Competition

Hong Kong pianist Aristo Sham, 29, has won the first prize of US$100,000 at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition 2025, one of the most prestigious competitions in the classical music world.

Established in 1962, the Cliburn is one of the most prestigious competitions in the classical music world, with participants aged between 18 and 30. Previous Cliburn winners, including Haochen Zhang, Nobuyuki Tsujii, Olga Kern, Vadym Kholodenko, Yekwon Sunwoo, and Beatrice Rana, are already world-renowned pianists. A total of 340 pianists from 45 countries and regions applied for this year's competition. 28 of them were invited to perform live in the competition, each performing a four-hour piece of music.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Sham, 29, has been playing the piano since the age of three and has won a number of local and international piano awards. In addition to the cash prize, he will also receive a three-year personalized career management package, including concert bookings, artistic support and publicity, with a total value of about US$2 million.
