Amid recent US government policies impacting international students, Hong Kong has stepped up efforts to support displaced young talent globally. The HK Education Bureau, in a statement to Wen Wei Po, confirmed it had urged all local universities to implement measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of eligible students and academics. These measures align with institutional goals to diversify admissions and attract top-tier talent.
The bureau expressed satisfaction with the proactive responses of local universities, which leverage government initiatives aimed at enhancing capacity and quality in higher education. It emphasized HK's role as an international education hub and its commitment to addressing the needs of students facing academic disruptions due to global educational shifts.
HK's competitive edge in education is underscored by its ranking among the top five globally in terms of overall education competitiveness. The city boasts five universities listed among the world's top 100, with several ranked as the most international. Its highly diverse and internationalized academic environment, coupled with world-class research talent, makes HK a highly attractive destination for global students.
To attract more outstanding talent, a series of measures has been implemented, including doubling the quota for non-local students in government-funded universities to 40%, expanding scholarship programs, and gradually increasing the number of slots under the HK PhD Fellowship Scheme.
The Education Bureau reiterated its commitment to promoting HK as a premier study destination by fostering networks and partnerships at national, regional, and international levels. In alignment with the country's strategy to develop talent, science, and education, HK aims to contribute significantly to the nation's needs while strengthening its "Study in HK" brand.
