The Hong Kong government's plan to launch five premium taxi fleets by late July gained momentum as "Bumblebee Taxis," one of the fleets, unveiled its recruitment drive and futuristic electric vehicles (EVs) at a Kowloon shopping mall today (May 26). The bright yellow-and-orange EVs, part of a push to decarbonize and upgrade the city's taxi services, drew crowds of drivers, industry insiders, and media.

Zero-Emission Ambitions
Sino Development (International) Limited, the operator of Bumblebee Taxis, announced plans to deploy 1,000 Geely Farizon pure electric taxis across Hong Kong by July, phasing out fossil fuel-powered cabs. Director Wong Siu-pang emphasized the fleet's commitment to "high-quality, carbon-neutral services" while showcasing the vehicles' luxury features: run-flat tires, 360-degree parking assist systems, in-cabin surveillance cameras, individual air vents per seat, and future alcohol detection systems to prevent drunk driving.

Inclusive Services and Tech-Driven Operations
The fleet will include 100 wheelchair-accessible taxis, partnering with local social welfare groups to provide barrier-free rides for seniors and people with disabilities. A proprietary app will enable real-time passenger feedback, with drivers rated on service quality. High-rated drivers earn bonuses, while repeat low ratings could lead to pay cuts or dismissal. "Our platform will prioritize fleet orders but also collaborate with third-party ride-hailing apps," said board secretary Mr. Yim.
Driver Recruitment and Training
Bumblebee aims to recruit 1,000 drivers in three phases, offering a HK$7,000 monthly base salary plus trip commissions. Drivers must work at least six hours daily, with no upper limit. Training covers road regulations, EV maintenance, empathy, and emotional management—the latter guided by in-house social workers.
Industry Transformation
Wong stressed that drivers must embody the fleet's "passenger-first" ethos, blending professionalism with warmth. The first batch of 200 drivers has already been filled.
Why It Matters
As Hong Kong pushes to modernize its iconic taxi industry, Bumblebee's tech-forward, eco-friendly model sets a new benchmark. With rival fleets expected to roll out soon, the city's streets may soon mirror its ambition to become a green mobility leader.
