The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) reported on Thursday that early indicators suggest the recent rise in COVID-19 activity is beginning to slow, though infection levels are expected to remain elevated in the short term. High-risk groups, including the elderly and individuals with chronic illnesses, are urged to stay alert and receive free additional booster doses to reduce the risk of severe illness and death.

The surge in cases observed since April aligns with a similar pattern seen during last July and August, with no unusual trends detected. While some surveillance metrics indicate a weakening upward trajectory over the past week, health authorities warned that COVID-19 transmission is likely to persist at high levels in the coming weeks.

According to the latest data (week ending May 17), the rise in SARS-CoV-2 concentrations in wastewater and the positivity rate of respiratory samples has moderated. The proportion of respiratory samples testing positive for COVID-19 edged up slightly from 13.66% (week ending May 10) to 13.8%, while wastewater viral levels increased from approximately 710,000 copies per liter to 770,000 copies—a slower rise compared to previous weeks.

Dr. Edwin Tsui, Controller of the CHP, noted that most COVID-19 infections in the general population now result in mild symptoms resembling common respiratory illnesses. However, he stressed that vulnerable groups—such as the elderly, young children, and those with chronic conditions or weakened immunity—face higher risks of severe outcomes. "Vaccination remains crucial for protecting high-risk individuals," he said.

Authorities reiterated the importance of strict personal and environmental hygiene practices, including wearing surgical masks when symptomatic, avoiding crowded areas, and seeking medical attention promptly. Free booster doses remain available at designated clinics and outreach stations, with over 21 million vaccine doses administered citywide to date.

The CHP emphasized that while the current wave mirrors seasonal patterns, sustained vigilance and preparedness are essential to mitigate risks amid global shifts toward integrated respiratory virus monitoring.
