The Secretary for Health, Professor Lo Chung-mau, participated in the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA) of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland, on May 19. He attended the Assembly alongside Dr. Ronald Lam, the Director of Health, as part of the Chinese delegation.

This year's theme, "One World for Health," addresses various topics, including universal health coverage, non-communicable disease prevention, antimicrobial resistance, health emergency preparedness, mental health, and the standardization of medical device nomenclature. The Minister of the National Health Commission, Mr. Lei Haichao, spoke about healthcare advancements in Mainland China during the plenary session.

In addition to the plenary, Professor Lo and Dr. Lam engaged in a side meeting with Dr. Meg Doherty from the WHO to discuss eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B. Professor Lo emphasized the HKSAR Government's commitment to maternal and child health and their plans to seek validation for "triple elimination" from the WHO this year.

During a meeting with Dr. Yukiko Nakatani, the interim Assistant Director-General for Antimicrobial Resistance at the WHO, Professor Lo highlighted the HKSAR Government's ongoing efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance through action plans launched in 2017 and 2022, along with various preventive measures.

Professor Lo and Dr. Lam also met with Singapore's Permanent Secretary for Health, Ms. Lai Wei Lin, to discuss communicable disease prevention, surveillance, and drug regulation, expressing interest in enhancing collaboration and sharing best practices.

In the evening, they attended a thematic side event co-hosted by the NHC and health authorities from Ethiopia, Peru, Tanzania, and Thailand, focused on empowering primary health care with digital intelligence for universal health coverage. Mr. Lei delivered a keynote speech at the event.

Upon arriving in Geneva on May 18, Professor Lo and Dr. Lam met with Mr. Lei and Mr. Chen Xu, China's Ambassador to the UN in Geneva, to discuss the latest healthcare developments and Hong Kong's involvement in WHO activities.
