NVIDIA is seeking to establish a research and development center in Shanghai to help the leading AI processor manufacturer maintain its competitiveness in China, according to the Financial Times.
The sales of NVIDIA in China have significantly declined due to strengthened U.S. export controls.
According to two sources, CEO Jensen Huang discussed the plan last month during a meeting with Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng. NVIDIA is renting new office space in Shanghai to accommodate current employees and potential expansion.
The new R&D center will focus on the specific needs of Chinese customers and the complex technical requirements necessary to comply with Washington's restrictions. The Shanghai team will also work on global R&D projects, including chip design verification, optimization of existing products, and research in key industries such as autonomous driving.
