Hong Kong's series of mega events continuously showcase its diverse charm, boost popularity, and bring economic benefits. The government estimates that various events in the first half of 2025 could attract around 840,000 visitors, generate approximately HKD $3.3 billion in consumer spending, and add about HKD $1.8 billion in economic value.

Many tourism industry professionals and Legislative Council (LegCo) Members believe the data demonstrates the effectiveness of these events. In the face of new tourism models for incoming visitors, better coordination and collaboration with the business sector are essential to maximize the benefits of these events.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced that in April this year, 3.8 million visitors came to Hong Kong, a 13% increase compared to the same month last year. In the first four months, total arrivals reached 16 million, nearly a 10% year-on-year increase.

The board noted sustained growth from multiple source markets, with visitors from Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, and Indonesia each increasing by over 20% compared to last year. Visitors from Australia recorded significant growth of over 30%.

The SAR government stated that more large-scale events will be held to attract tourists, welcoming them to visit Hong Kong through various means.

Visitor numbers for April exceed 16 million

The Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Association, Timothy Chui, noted that the implementation of multiple mega events in recent years has created favorable conditions for a thriving events economy. For instance, since the Kai Tak Sports Park opened, sports events like the Rugby Sevens and concerts, such as those by Nicholas Tse, have been fully booked.

"Visitors are typically high-spending individuals; tickets themselves are not cheap, and many performances take place in the evening, leading many to stay and spend in Hong Kong afterward." He pointed out that besides performances, there are also many exhibitions, such as the Art Central 2025 exhibition held in March, which attracted numerous high-end visitors.

"A friend from the medical field visited in March for a conference, and they chose to hold their meeting in conjunction with the art exhibition, indicating their high spending capacity and taste."

LegCo Member Shiu Ka-fai from the wholesale and retail sector believes that sports and exhibition events are effective in attracting a diverse range of visitors. However, he emphasized the need to consider how to "retain high-end guests for an additional night" by packaging similar-priced accommodations, restaurants, and exhibitions into a convenient sales bundle, which could attract more high-end customers.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, global travel patterns have changed. Beyond traditional sightseeing, many recent visitors have engaged in deeper community experiences. For that, the SAR government continues to explore new attractions.

Scholars highlight Hong Kong's stability and diversity of events

Tourism scholar and program director of the Vocational Training Council, Dennis Wong, analyzed that Hong Kong now offers a variety of major events. In addition to traditional festivals and cultural exhibitions, the opening of the Kai Tak Sports Park allows for more large-scale international sports events and concerts. Thus, he suggested hosting more world-class competitions in the future to attract high-spending travelers.

In light of the U.S. tariff war and geopolitical factors, Wong believes it's necessary to observe the impact of the tariff war on the global economy. However, Hong Kong still possesses many advantages, such as being a safe city amidst regional conflicts and natural disasters, along with its international appeal and diverse events.

Regarding promotional strategies, he believes the current focus on social media, influencers, and KOLs (Key Opinion Leaders) is correct. The approach should be combined with exhibitions to enhance promotion among business travelers who can bring their families along for leisure, achieving a leveraging effect.

"The data for the first half of this year is promising, establishing a good momentum... Looking ahead to the second half, we are very optimistic that visitor numbers, spending, and economic value added will surpass those of 2024."
