
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee met with Kuwaiti leaders this morning (May 13), including HH Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Amir of the State of Kuwait; HH Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, the Crown Prince; and HE Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah, the Acting Prime Minister.
During the meetings, Lee emphasized HK's dedication to promoting high-quality development in partnership with Belt and Road Initiative countries. He noted that HK and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries share common visions and objectives, with significant opportunities to achieve mutual benefits through collaboration.

Lee introduced the composition of the HK and Chinese Mainland delegation, highlighting HK's unique advantages and its strong desire to strengthen ties with Middle Eastern nations. He expressed particular interest in signing a free trade agreement with the GCC and urged Kuwait, as the GCC's term chair in 2025, to support and facilitate the negotiations.
Inviting Kuwaiti leaders to explore business and investment opportunities, Lee stressed HK's strengths as an international financial center and innovation hub. He welcomed the establishment of a Kuwait Investment Authority office in HK, noting that Kuwait's sovereign wealth fund is one of the largest globally. Lee also encouraged Kuwait's sovereign wealth funds to uncover new prospects in HK.
