Professor Ivan Hung, Chair Professor of the Department of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong, stated today (May 12) that HK is currently experiencing a COVID-19 peak, with positivity rates climbing steadily and severe and fatal cases continuing to emerge. He noted a decline in community immunity levels and antibody responses, coupled with the constant evolution of the virus.

Currently, the XDV and JN.1 sublineages are the dominant COVID-19 variants in HK. These variants exhibit stronger immune escape capabilities, increasing the likelihood of reinfections. Professor Hung warned that high-risk groups, including children, the elderly, patients with chronic illnesses, and those with compromised immune systems, are at greater risk of severe illness and complications if infected. He urged these groups to get vaccinated promptly.

Professor Hung predicted that this COVID-19 peak could last 3 to 4 months, with case numbers expected to peak within the next two weeks. Following the peak, the elevated case numbers may persist for another 6 to 8 weeks. He also highlighted that mild cases are likely to outnumber severe ones during this wave, as healthy individuals infected with the new variants often experience mild symptoms and may remain unaware of their infection. He advised the public to perform rapid antigen tests if symptoms arise to confirm infection.

According to data from the Centre for Health Protection, the COVID-19 positivity rate in respiratory samples reached 11.42% during the week of April 27 to May 3, the highest in a year. Additionally, 31 COVID-related deaths were recorded during the same week. As of May 3, the cumulative number of COVID-related deaths in HK since the end of the pandemic has reached 1,430.
