As Mother's Day approaches, the New Youth Forum released a survey today (May 10) indicating that 70% of respondents plan to celebrate Mother's Day in Hong Kong, with most choosing to do so through family dinners as a way to express their love and gratitude towards their mothers.
The survey was conducted from April 28 to May 8, 2025, randomly sampling 517 Hong Kong residents aged 18 and above. It not only focused on holiday plans but also explored public opinions on family-friendly employment measures, aiming to promote a more harmonious social and workplace environment.
The results showed that 48.9% of respondents plan to spend Mother's Day with their families, particularly enthusiastic among those aged 30 to 49. Dining together emerged as the primary way to celebrate, with many opting to give greeting cards, gifts, or flowers, especially among the younger demographic aged 18 to 29, who prefer gift-giving.
In terms of budget, nearly 40% of respondents plan to spend HK$1,000 or more, indicating a willingness to invest economically in expressing their affection.
Despite the ongoing trend of spending in mainland China, most respondents still choose to celebrate in Hong Kong, primarily considering factors like their elders being in Hong Kong and their habit of celebrating locally.
The survey also revealed that nearly half of the respondents believe that the current family-friendly employment measures in Hong Kong are inadequate, with working mothers expressing a more urgent need for these measures. Suggestions from the public include establishing flexible work arrangements, providing childcare services, and special leave for family needs.
